Massachusetts
and Slot Machines
With the recent
shake up in Massachusetts government and
the various committees, it would seem
that the idea of slot machines and
casinos has seen new light. The
legislative committee that is being led
by Ashland Senator Karen Spilka spent
yesterday discussing slot machines and
casinos and their possibilities for the
state.
This comes hot on the heels of former
House Speaker Salvatore DiMasi telling
Governor Deval Patrick that there was no
way that he was going to bring in slot
machines and up to three casinos, and
ensured that it did not happen. However,
with DiMasi now out and Robert DeLeo in,
that promise is out with the old so to
speak.
DiMasi had to resign following an ethics
scandal, and now DeLeo says that he
likes the idea of slot machines and
casinos. Senate President Therese Murray
is in agreement with him and said that
she is for the slot machines and casinos
as well. Some officials are still on the
fence as to how they feel about the slot
machines but many of them are at the
very least open to discussing them –
something that DiMasi never was.
Some are concerned about the social
implications that it could have for
them, and the problems that the slot
machines and expanded gambling could
have for the state. But they are also
aware that they could bring in much
needed money for the state and therefore
are truly torn in how they feel. Only
time will tell if they get passed or
not.
