Seminole Deal
on Hold
The Seminoles have long wanted to
bring slot machines to the state of
Florida. However ex-Governor Jeb Bush
refused to give in and the Seminoles
would not get slot machines. But then
Miami Dade and Broward County went ahead
and voted in the legalization of slot
machines and the tribe had it made.
See if Bush had signed the deal before
the counties had brought in theirs he
could have made them bring in revenue
for the state and give them some. But
with South Florida now bringing in slot
machines by law the state has to allow
them to have them as well, and the
stakes have changed.
This means that the state needed to up
the ante with the Seminoles so that they
could still get some of the slot machine
revenue. So Governor Charlie Crist came
in and signed a deal with the tribe that
would give the state a portion of their
proceeds and they could bring in slot
machines and basic table games.
But the legislature got mad that he made
a deal without them and they have held
it up because they wanted to put their
stamp on it. They have now come up with
a deal that is very similar but it has
to be voted on. The tribe will get slot
machines if they give the state $150
million a year – and the tribe will get
slot machines as well as baccarat,
blackjack and chemin de fer at their
tribal casinos.
