Maryland Opponents Concerned
Maryland’s slot machine opponents are
trying to warn those in the state about
the dangers of slot machines. They don’t
think residents understand what they are
getting themselves into with the
legalization of slot machines – and they
want people to realize that they need to
veto any attempt to bring them in.
Scott Arceneaux of Marylanders United to
Stop Slots held a news conference in
Annapolis to try and get residents to
understand the ramifications of bringing
in slot machines. He wants to stress the
social ills that come from bringing in
the games and how it will impact their
state.
This was the second of five news
conferences that Arceneaux and his group
have planned around the state. They are
holding them in the areas where the slot
machine casinos are going to appear if
the referendum is approved in November.
If the slot machines are approved there
would be up to 15,000 machines brought
into the state – and they would be
located in Anne Arundel, Cecil and
Worcester Counties. They would also be
in Baltimore City and Rocky Gap State
Park located near Cumberland.
The opposition is determined to inform
those within the state as they are sure
that when given all the facts about slot
machines that they will not vote them
in. The supporters of the slot machines
say that they are needed for education
funding and for the horse tracks to keep
running, but the opponents say that it
comes at too high of a cost.
