Slot Machine Restrictions 

The Board of Aldermen of Carrboro are discussing slot machines. They are trying to figure out how they might bring in slot machines and regulate them at the same time. They are aware that there are sweepstakes cafés that are popping up all over the place and they are trying to come up with a way of handling them that is good for everyone. They know that if they don’t do it right that they are going to have to pay the price later on. 

But with these slot machines already coming in, they are curious as to how they head them off at the pass. These cafés are going around North Carolina law that says that the slot machines are illegal by selling internet time and phone cards that earn players the right to play these slot machines. They argue that they are not truly slot machines because they have a predetermined win. But there are those that are aware of the fine line that they are walking, and they think that it is time to head them off at the pass. They understand that if they can keep them from getting out of control that they might be able to do something about it. 

They are considering changing the town’s land use ordinance to allow the slot machines to come in, because then they feel that they can regulate them better than they are doing now. But they have to decide where they are going to allow them as they do not want the slot machines in residential areas.
