Atlantic City is Feeling the Crunch
Many
of Atlantic City’s customers are
switching to a new slot machine, and it
is starting to hurt their bottom line.
Ever since Pennsylvania decided to
legalize slot machines, AC knew that
this day would come, and it finally has.
More and more of their previous
customers are making the choice to go to
a PA slot machine casino instead of
going all the way to AC.
January gaming revenues were down by
2.9%, with the casinos winning just
under $395 million. Slot machine revenue
was down by 7.2% and table games rose
8.2% - so now they know what is still
pulling them in. PA decided against the
legalization of table games with their
slot machines, and many feel it may have
been a poor choice.
The table games are obviously what is
still bringing Pennsylvanian’s to the AC
shore. The PA casinos say that they are
not overly concerned as they knew that
the table games would be a factor, but
they concentrated on taking some slot
machine business from them, and they
expect to keep seeing AC’s numbers drop.
Some casinos did not see a drop in their
numbers. The Hilton, Resorts, Harrah’s
and Trump Marina all saw their slot
machine numbers go up; while the Borgata,
Caesars, Showboat and Trump Plaza had
record months at the tables.
