Alexander Looking to Set Up Online
Casino
Even
though it is illegal in both the United
States and Canada to have internet
casino operations, the Alexander First
Nation tribe is currently taking license
applications to do just that. They are
looking to set up offshore casino firms’
computer servers on their lands, and
they say they are perfectly in their
right to do so.
The tribe says that because they are on
Indian land they make their own rules
per the federal government. They say
that Alberta does not have a say in
whether or not they do this, as they
have the legal right to. They are
currently speaking with their lawyers to
determine how to proceed as Alberta is
trying to put a halt to it.
They say that they are very clear that
US and Canadian residents are not
allowed to gamble on their sites, but
they are in their legal right to offer
them. The federal government has sides
with Alberta on this one, however, and
they say that the tribe must follow the
rules and restrictions set forth by
Alberta.
The tribe says they are using the
Kahnawake Mohawk reserve’s online casino
hosting platform as their basis for
setting it up. The Quebec government has
said that they are operating illegally,
but have never brought charges against
the tribe. The Alexander tribe says that
they stand to make $45,000 in start up
fees as well as $40,000 in annual fees
from each of the online casinos that the
tribe hosts.
