Australia Considering Smart Cards

Smart cards are cards that you use with slot machines and gambling, so that you don’t have to worry about cash. It seems like it would make life much easier for both the slot machine and poker players, and many in the industry feel that eventually all slot machines will be run with some kind of smart card system.

The Australian Provincial Cities Association is one of those groups that are behind the process. The APCA is pushing the Australian government to replace cash at all of their poker machines in South Australia with the new system. They say that not only will it make things easier for everyone, it also helps with gambling addictions.

The cards would help with limiting temptation for those with slot machine and gambling problems, as it would limit the amount that gamblers were able to spend weekly and/or monthly. This way they could not spend more than their allotted amount.

But the Australian government is balking at the price it would cost to implement the smart card system. They say that it would cost too much to use them at all slot machines. However, supporters say this is not true, as they could get competing bids for the contract to replace the cash system at the slot machines. They say that as there are more than 12,000 slot machines currently up and running in South Australia, someone would pay a pretty penny to get the deal.
