Bingo Addicts?
With
all of the recent concerns of slot
machine and gambling addiction, many do
not stop to think about another
addiction that gets very little notice –
Bingo. Bingo is one of the most popular
games around, and many feel that there
are probably more people addicted to
Bingo than slot machines or betting.
Bingo even has a different image than
the other methods of gambling, in that
it is seen as more of a community event,
usually taking place at your local
church. However, slot machines and poker
tables are thought of as being in sin
ridden, smoke filled casinos, where
degenerates of all ages just sit in
front of the machines and feed their
money into a downward spiral of bad luck
and poor choices.
However, one group, Pressbot.org, has
discovered that there really is a
difference in Bingo players and slot
machine and poker players. Bingo players
usually are older in age, but they play
for fun – and if they happen to win,
that is just an added bonus. The
desperation found in many slot machine
and poker players just isn’t there. It
has been found that it is actually
healthy for seniors to play because it
keeps their minds active.
They have found through a study as the
Centre for Visual Cognition at
Southampton University’s Psychology
Department, that bingo actually
increases the speed and precision of
short term memory. They also found that
it can help with the mental decay that
usually comes with aging. Much of that
has to do with the immediate need and
fast pacing of the game, which is not
really found in slot machine or poker
playing.
