Some Gambling News
Two
items caught my eye, one about online
gaming and the other about poker
classifications. They both seemed rather
interesting, but I will lead with the
less entertaining one regarding online
slot machine and poker playing.
PartyGaming has announced that their
online division is expecting profits of
$140 million for last year. The company
had bailed on the US market last year
because of the Department of Justice and
their never ending quest to stop online
gaming, but it did not ultimately hurt
the company. Also, Paradise Poker room
has changed software platforms to Boss
Media. Sportingbet PLC will have to
eliminate $110 million estimated value
of their current software to bring in
the new software, but the company thinks
it is a good idea because of the US
governments ban on online gambling.
Lastly, American Gaming Association
President Frank Fahrenkopf has said that
he does not think that Congress would
ever classify poker as a game of skill.
The game is currently listed as a game
of chance, which enables the government
to lump it in with slot machines and
everything else and put it under the
UIGEA heading. Many think it is a game
of skill and it should have its own
classification, but if that happened it
would change much of the outlook of
American gaming laws.
