House May Pass Slot Machines
It is
unusual to hear so many legislators
change their minds and vote for slot
machines instead of against, but that is
exactly what is happening in the House
this week. Several members of the
Indiana House of Representatives and the
Senate have decided to give slot
machines a fair shake, even if they
themselves do not necessarily agree.
There have been other proposals that
have come along that have been similar
to this one – there are groups who are
seeking the legalization of slot
machines at horse racing venues in the
state. However, even if the bills had
managed to pass the House, they never
make it through the Senate.
Senate President Pro Tem David Long has
said that even though he does not care
to see slot machines expanded, he will
allow his caucus to decide whether or
not it will get a hearing. Senate Tax
Chairman Luke Kenley has a similar
stance, in that he says that if it makes
it to his committee, he will have his
group at least give it a hearing.
But just when you have the Senate
finally starting to think slot machines
might not be so bad, you have those in
the House who are now starting to think
they might be. Too late – the bill has
already passed.
