New Hampshire Residents Like Their
Casinos (Part I)
The
University of Massachusetts Dartmouth
Center for Policy Analysis has done a
study pertaining to the amount of trips
that New Hampshire residents make to the
Foxwoods and Mohegan Sun casinos. They
have found that within the past twelve
months alone, residents have taken
almost a half of a million trips to the
slot machine casinos. The survey is part
of a larger survey that is trying to
find out how New Englanders feel about
the slot machines and casinos.
New Hampshire residents make up
approximately 3% of the Foxwoods
customers, and 2% of the Mohegan Sun’s
customers. They also found that of those
trips, 92% of them were made by those
more than 30 years of age. One in five
residents surveyed said that they had
been to one of the two casinos within
the past year. Roughly 62% of those
visitors were women, and 38% were men.
The survey shows that not only are most
New Hampshire residents pro-gambling,
they would welcome slot machines and
gambling in their own state. It also
determined that they would continue to
go across the state line until they were
legalized in the state itself. They
would also go to Massachusetts or Rhode
Island if those states decided to
legalize the slot machines as well.
New Hampshire’s gamblers are educated as
well. Roughly 71% of those gambling have
a bachelor’s degree or higher – which
makes them the highest number of
educated gamblers out of the four states
that were surveyed: Massachusetts, Rhode
Island, Maine and New Hampshire. At
least 83% had some college experience
even if they did not have a diploma.
