Slot Machines are Good for County, for
Hoosier Park
Many
think that having slot machines at
Hoosier Park would be good for Hoosier
Park, but they don’t think far past
that. What they are failing to see is
that the influx of revenue from the slot
machines would benefit the track, yes,
but it would also benefit the county and
the state. The fact that a new slot
machine legalization bill has made it
out of committee and is on its way to a
full House vote is enough to get you
excited.
Republicans have always tried to keep a
lid on the legalization of slot
machines, and the governor has made it
very clear that he does not want them
either. However, the Democrats managed
to get a 51-49 majority in the House and
many think that this will help get the
slot machine bill passed. Republicans
still control the Senate, however, so it
could be too close to call.
Many don’t understand why the
Republicans are giving the slot machine
bill such a hard time, considering the
state already allows riverboat gambling,
off track betting, horse racing, and the
lottery. Gambling is already ever
present in the state, so the slot
machine bill would simply be expanding
what the state already had.
The additional slot machine revenue
would keep the tracks running, which
means keeping all of the jobs that are
at the tracks. It also means revenue for
the counties and for the state, and
considering the estimates of between $53
and $185 million in revenue – it is well
worth legalizing them.
