Road to Slot Machines
Illinois thinks it may have come up with
a way to increase funding to their roads
and to their schools – legalize more
slot machines at their riverboats. They
think that if they allowed the
riverboats to add 6,000 more gaming
positions – whether they are slot
machines or table games – the state
could see an increase in revenue.
The state’s Republicans think that the
new slot machines would bring in $500
million more the first year and $450
million each year after that to pay for
construction costs. However, the
Democrats have yet to sign off any any
sort of increase, and the House just
decided to get rid of the state’s
riverboats all together.
But lawmakers say that the billions that
the slot machines could bring in are
needed, and they are asking the
Democrats to try and see it their way.
Some think that the state is rushing to
legalize more slot machines, when really
there are other ways that they could be
bringing in revenue. Some think that the
money taken from the slot machines could
go into a fund that would enable the
state to pull from it to fund things
that are needed.
However, some say that the idea of this
general fund is good, but none of this
will happen without the horse tracks
getting slot machines as well. The most
important part of the plan though, is to
get their roads finished and their
schools more funding.
