Table Games Approved, Now What?
Some
people are not very happy that the table
games referendum was passed through the
West Virginia legislature, or that the
governor chose to sign it. They say that
all this does is open the floodgates for
more table games and expanded gambling
throughout the state. They say that the
government has been too loose with the
gaming rules in the state, and that they
have gone against the Constitution in
approving them.
They are upset that county governments
that have a track and vote in table
games will get more money than those who
don’t. They are upset that the economic
growth that these counties are aiming
for will only hurt the state in the end.
First they say that the government voted
in the approval for table games to be
voted in those four specific counties,
and that the original bill limited it to
those counties that had horse or dog
tracks already.
But then others said that it was too
restrictive and that some counties could
not be allowed things that other
counties were, so the language was
changed to incorporate all counties.
Now, no matter where you live you could
end up with a racetrack, and thus slot
machines and table games in your
backyard if the people in your county
like the idea.
It is now apparent that since the
counties with the racetracks will get
more money than those that don’t, more
and more counties will be adding
racetracks so that they get more of the
money as well. They are upset because
they want to know where they go next.
They said that PA might get slot
machines, so they voted to approve slot
machines. Then they said that PA might
get table games so now they are allowing
table games. They want to know what
happens if PA gets table games, where
will WV go next for their source of
revenue?
