Texas Looking to Future
The
Texas Lottery is currently evaluating
where they are at in terms of servicing
their clients. The Governor is looking
to sell the servicing of the lottery to
an outside financial firm, which will
probably mean some big changes for the
lottery. One of the things that are
currently under consideration is the
idea of bringing in slot machines.
Bringing in online games, Keno, or video
slot machines will completely change the
way the lottery is viewed, and many say
not for the better. They say that by
adding in these things they are opening
the door for other slot machines and out
and out gambling to come in.
The governor has been entertaining
offers from $14 to $28 billion, and
people say that with that kind of money
comes a promise of slot machines and
gambling. They say that they are
surrounded by slot machines and gambling
in other states, and that if people are
looking for that, it can be just a bus
ride away. However, lottery officials
and the governor say that they need to
see what can be done with the lottery
from an outside source.
The beauty of it for many is that the
deal would have to go through the
Legislature who does not seem keen on
legalizing any sort of slot machine or
expanding gambling. They seem to feel
that the addition of slot machines, or
keno, or online gambling, would require
a constitutional amendment – as would
the sale of the lottery itself.
