Adding
More Slot Machines May Not Be a Good
Idea
Many in
Connecticut are afraid that with
Massachusetts planning on adding slot
machines to their state that they are
going to be shut out of all of that
wonderful money that currently comes
across state lines. They are correct,
for experts say that the state is going
to be looking at a loss somewhere around
$450 million – and that is nothing to
sneeze at.
However, the state says that perhaps
they should add more slot machines and
casinos and put them along the
Massachusetts/Connecticut border. They
think that by moving the casinos closer
to the state that they will entice those
that live near the border to continue to
come into their state and leave their
money.
The tribes would of course have to run
them, for the state currently has a no
compete agreement with the tribes and if
they try to get around it they are
looking at losing another $450 million
that the tribes currently pay them. The
Mashantucket Pequots have already said
that they would not continue paying the
state if they try to bring in their own
machines.
Experts say that the state could allow
the Pequots and the Mohegans to operate
new slot machines and casinos along the
border and that would make everyone
happy. They think that if they move fast
enough they might even convince them not
to build the casinos near their border
at all.
However, residents say that the state is
already overrun with slot machines and
additional gambling is the last thing
they need. They say that if the other
state wants to build their slot machines
then let them, they don’t want any more
in their back yard than they already
have.
