Patrick's Slot Machine Bill at
Standstill
Governor
Deval Patrick has been waiting to see
what would happen with his slot machine
casino bill, but if early reports are to
be believed, there won’t be much to see.
According to some representatives the
bill will not be moving forward as there
is little to no support for it. This
means that it would not get voted on
until at least 2009, much later than the
governor was hoping for.
According to Rep. David Flynn of
Bridgewater, the slot machine casino
bill will not be going to a vote at all.
Flynn says that there is “very little
support” for the bill which means it
will probably get an “adverse ruling”
and will be blocked from getting voted
on.
He says that Rep. Daniel Bosley is head
of the Economic Development Committee
and that Bosley will be issuing the
adverse report which will keep it from
being voted on when it gets to the
house. Flynn says that he has his own
slot machine “racino” bill going to the
house floor, and though he expects it
not to pass – he is expecting it to at
least get a vote.
Flynn’s slot machine bill was
cosponsored with Rep. James Fagan, and
calls for an installation of 2,500 slot
machines at the state’s four racing
parks. This would give a huge and fast
boost economically to the state as
Raynham Park would be one of the
receivers of the slot machines. They
could have them up and running within
100 days, which would allow them to save
both the jobs at the racetracks and many
programs which are likely to be cut
without the much needed income.
