Council Deciding on Slot Machines
The
Cordish Company, and specifically David
Cordish, would like to bring in slot
machines to Anne Arundel County in
Maryland. He has put in a bid to the
state to bring in the slot machines, and
now the public and the Anne Arundel
County Council have to decide about
local zoning ordinances that may or may
not allow that to happen.
The voters in the state have approved
slot machines, but as to where they go
or not has not yet been written in
stone. Cordish would like to bring in
more than four thousand slot machines
near the Arundel Mills Mall. The public
is ready to weigh in on it as well, and
many believe that the council itself is
divided on the idea.
According to the Washington Post two are
against the slot machines and the public
has yet to speak on the matter. One
council member says that the public did
not say that slot machines could be
brought in near the mall – they said
that slot machines were approved at
racetracks only.
Those that are for the slot machines say
that they will increase revenue across
the county, and especially at the mall.
They argue that there are millions to be
made in slot machine revenue and that it
will be a boost to the state’s economy
as well as the county’s.
However, the public is due to speak on
the slot machine issue on Thursday and
many think that they will be mostly
against the idea. There has already been
many grumblings from residents who say
that this is not what they signed on
for, and they don’t want the slot
machines in their community.
