Machine Issue Heats Up
Well, it
just keeps getting better. Slot machines
are a hotbed of opinions no matter where
you go, but these days they are being
hotly contested in New Hampshire of all
places. There are those that are
vehemently for and against them on both
sides, and they are letting their voices
be heard.
A recent article talked about how the
Senate Ways and Means Committee voted
3-2 to recommend a bill that would allow
slot machines to come to the state’s
race tracks and North County casinos.
The bill is now off to the Senate to see
if they will pass it as well. If so, the
slot machine bill would then go to the
House and it is unclear as to whether or
not they would pass it.
The House had literally the day before
voted to kill two expanded gambling
bills, so it is not expected to pass. If
the law passes then Rockingham Park in
Salem would be the biggest benefactor
bringing in up to 5,000 slot machines.
The owners said that they would invest
$450 million in the track if they get
the slot machines.
However, residents are clearly divided
on the issue. For as many of them that
are for the bill that there are, there
are also many others against it. They
say that the slot machines would bring
nothing but trouble. They say that they
would bring crime and ruin their state.
Those that are for it say that people
are going to gamble anyway, so why not
allow them to do it in their state and
keep the money in their borders.
