May Not Get Slot Machines at Track
There is
an outdated and obscure provision on the
Kansas law books that might keep a
company from bringing in slot machines
near Dodge City. The law states that
certain officers and investors in
companies that are looking to supply
slot machines to casinos must undergo
background checks by the state before
they can provide the equipment.
According to Butler National’s attorney
John Frieden, there are some slot
machine firms who don’t want to give
them the machines now. The new Boot hill
Casino and Resort is having a hard time
finding a company that will give them
the slot machines because of the law and
that they don’t want the state poking
around in their business.
The location of the new slot machine
casino is also the setting for the old
“Gunsmoke” series, which should help
bring business to the casino. However,
it won’t do them any good if they can’t
get slot machines for those visitors.
Now the Senate says that although they
were hoping to avoid any kind of slot
machine or gambling debate this year, it
looks like they are going to have to
rewrite the law so that the slot
machines will come.
The problem is that they have to act
fast as Butler has to purchase their
slot machines by April if they want to
open on time, which doesn’t leave the
state a lot of wiggle room. They are
looking at it, and are expecting to
debate it next week, but they have to
move fast.
