Lower
Gambling Age for Slot Machines?
The state
of Florida is looking to see if they
might be able to change the gambling age
from 21 to 18 within the state. They say
that there is some disparity in how
gambling is handled within the state and
that there are problems with how it is
determined what you can do at what age.
Right now those under the age of 21 can
gamble in the form of the lottery, at
racetracks, and they can play poker.
Those 21 or older can play Class III
gambling games such as slot machines,
blackjack, baccarat, etc. The package
that is on the table would make slot
machines, etc. available to the 21 and
under club as well. It is part of the
package that allows the Seminole tribe
to bring in craps, roulette, blackjack,
etc. into their establishments making
them into actual casinos.
The provision for changing the gambling
age has been slid into the deal, and
many are upset about it. They say that
those under the age of 21 do not have
the emotional maturity to handle playing
slot machines and other high revenue
games – and that it is shady and
underhanded of legislators to even try
it.
For their part, legislators are looking
at the fact that they will be able to
bring in much more money to the state if
they throw their net a little wider and
allow more people to play slot machines.
They say that they know adults who are
not responsible enough to play slot
machines and yet they are allowed to and
argue that there is no difference.
However, as any one with any brains
knows there is a large difference
between the average 18 and 21 year olds
– and giving them the ability to play
slot machines is just a bad idea.
