Sedgwick Will Not Get Revote
Greyhound
Park wants slot machines. They have
wanted them for a very long time and
have maintained consistently that
without slot machines they cannot
compete in today’s market. The owner,
Phil Ruffin, said that they will not be
able to perform without slot machines
because it is just impossible to compete
when everyone else is offering racing
and slots.
However, so far Ruffin has not gotten
his slot machines. Sedgwick County had
voted on the bill that would have
allowed slot machines at the track and
reduce the amount of money that the
state takes from the casino slot
machines. However, the measure was voted
down, and although Ruffin has been
trying to get it to a revote – he was
not successful.
The Senate committee voted Wednesday to
remove from the bill that is up for a
vote the part that says slot machines
will be allowed at Greyhound Park.
Senate Bill 273 will give more slot
machine revenue to race track owners,
but will not give Ruffin his slots.
Ruffin closed down the track after the
last vote saying that he would not
reopen the track until the slot machines
were legalized and put in. It looks like
it is going to stay closed then. Ruffin
says that the language on the original
bill was confusing and that is why it
was voted down. However, it doesn’t seem
to matter – because he won’t be getting
his slots any time soon.
