Texans
Want Slot Machines
Tired of
watching millions of dollars in gambling
revenue go over the state line every
year, there is a hard working group that
is trying to get slot machine legalized
in the great state of Texas. They say
that they are tired of the busses that
come into their state from other states
for the sole purpose of bussing them
into their casinos to play their slot
machines, and make them tons of money.
There are several bills and state
constitutional amendments that they are
currently considering; one is SJ31 –
which would allow voters to decide
whether or not to allow slot machines in
state at horse and dog tracks, casinos
on tribal lands, and resort casinos. The
House version is HJR70. There is also
SB1084 which would do the same thing,
only without voter approval – and the
House version is HB1724.
HJR107 would allow voters to decide
whether or not to bring in slot machines
on the barrier islands, cities of more
than 675,000, on tribal lands, and at
race tracks. HB1308 would let the tribes
in El Paso and Livingston protection if
they decide to bring in slot machines on
their land.
Then there is HB4062 which would
specifically allow slot machines at race
tracks and casino gambling on tribal
lands; and HB222 which lets poker be
authorized and regulated – all the while
declaring it a game of skill.
Lobbyists are working hard to get their
bills passed, and the know that if they
are successful the state of Texas will
have a huge cash flow. They know that
slot machines are what their residents
want, and that many of them want full
fledged casinos as well. Their opponents
say that they have done just fine all
these years without them, but they can’t
deny the amount of money that the state
could be receiving instead of watching
it all go over their borders.
