Racing Needs Help
The Texas
Racing Commission has been asking for
slot machines for years, and this year
is no different. They say that with
residents able to go over the state line
to play slot machines at the tracks over
there, why would they stick around where
they are not given that option? They
want help getting the slot machines so
that they can compete in the market and
keep some of Texans’ revenue in state.
Officials that oversee the industry are
taking another avenue to accomplish the
same goal. They went to the Capitol and
told them that they need a bail out.
They say that they need emergency funds
to keep their doors open, and that the
fact that they are in trouble means that
the state is as well because they cannot
pay the state what they owe them in
“uncashed bets.”
They are asking the governor for an
emergency grant, and couldn’t help but
add that if they were allowed to have
slot machines that they probably would
not need such a bail out. There are many
within the state that agree. They think
that slot machines are a good way to
bring in additional revenue to the
state, as well as keep and increase
jobs. If the tracks close, there will be
hundreds of people out of work.
They say that they have had a decrease
in attendance because people are
choosing to go to those states that have
slot machines instead of those that
don’t because it allows them another
form of gambling. They say that to
survive they will need to offer them as
well.
