White
Hall Gaming Remains Closed
Police
raided the White Hall Gaming Center last
week and seized 101 suspected illegal
gaming and slot machines. They also took
more than a half a million dollars in
cash in addition to the slot machines
stating that they are illegal and should
not be run on the premises. The gaming
center is obviously disagreeing with the
decision.
The gaming center is still closed after
the slot machine raid, and police are
still in custody of both the slot
machines and the more than $560,000 that
they took at the time of the raid.
However, the attorney for the charity
that was running the slot machines says
that the machines and the cash should
not have been seized in the raid. He
maintains that the group has done
nothing wrong.
Their attorney, Collins Pettaway, says
that he is trying to get the judge to
issue a protective order and to stop the
seizures. He has filed for a declaratory
judgment, a restraining order, a
complaint for permanent injunction and a
motion to quash the search warrant in
Lowndes County Circuit Court. The
problem is that as soon as these motions
were filed the judge recused himself
from the case.
Former Supreme Court Justice Mark
Kennedy is now handling the case and
David Barber, who is the Commander of
Governor Bob Riley’s Task Force on
Illegal Gambling did not say whether or
not there were more raids planned for
the future. Riley has made it very clear
that he is bound and determined to crack
down on illegal slot machines and
gambling within the state, so it can be
expected that this is not the last one
of these we have seen.
