Governor
Responds to Attorney General
Governor Bob Riley has made his position
very clear over the past that he will
not allow illegal slot machines to
operate in his state. He says that the
law is very clear in terms of what will
be allowed and what isn’t and all of
these lawmakers trying to make it seem
like they are not breaking the law is
ridiculous. The Attorney General of
Alabama has jut come out saying that he
was taking over the quest to eliminate
illegal slot machines, but he has also
made it very clear that he is not really
interested in removing any of the
machines that are already there.
Allegedly he is more interested in
supporting the gambling groups than he
is the law.
Riley
said that he was “deeply disappointed”
to see that the Attorney General was
continuing to thwart the legal process.
He said that they have been talking and
they have tried to come to some kind of
an agreement as to how the slot machines
should be handled, and that he had
suggested several ways that they might
work together on this. He said that he
had come up with the idea that the
casinos close, their slot machines get
evaluated, and if they are legal they
open back up. If they are illegal, then
they have to remove them from the
premises.
However, he says that the AG called a
press conference to say that he was
going against Riley on the issue,
instead of simply telling him that he
didn’t think it would work or that he
did not agree with the plan. He said
that the AG is only happy with a
solution that allows the illegal slot
machines to continue running, and he
cannot support that decision. He says
that a crime is a crime no matter how
you look at it, and if it was a drug
dealer or child molester than then it
would be illegal – plain and simple.
