Catholic
Church Against Slot Machines
There
is a war being waged in
Massachusetts
as to whether or not slot machines
should be allowed. There are those that
want to see several casinos added, or
even just bring them in at the tracks.
But there are also a lot of people who
don’t want to see them brought in at
all. This is where the Catholic Church
comes in. They say that expanding
gambling in the state would be a bad
idea and that it would only do more harm
than good.
The
church says that slot machines are
really only a tax on the poor, and that
it increases crime and unemployment in
the states that do offer it. The state
says that they will bring in jobs and
increase the amount of revenue that they
have, but the church says that the money
comes in at too high of a price. The
Massachusetts Catholic Conference has
come out in support of the bishop’s
opposition to bringing in more slot
machines to the state. They said that
although they understand that it is a
“legitimate form of recreation” that it
will eventually become “enslavement” in
those people who are unable to stop
gambling once they have started.
They
say that there are social ills and
repercussions that must be addressed as
they are a very real part of the
problems that come in with slot
machines. They said that when a person
chooses to go to a slot machine instead
of going home and feeding their family –
there is a real problem there. They said
that you find this with any kind of bill
that allows “predatory gambling” which
is what they say slot machines are.
