Illegal Slot
Machine Bust
The
county police and the owner of some slot
machines seem to have a difference of
opinion. The fact of the matter is that
the police maintain that the slot
machines are illegal, while the owner
says that they are simply electronic
bingo machines and are therefore legal.
It seems that the courts are going to
have to make the final decision in the
case.
No
charges were filed following the slot
machine raid, and the county has agreed
that that an independent lab should take
a look at the slot machines. The games
in question are “New Fruit Bonus”
machines and they need to be evaluated
to see if they comply with state law or
if they are in fact illegal slot
machines. There will be a hearing on the
subject on April 7th.
The
slot machines were located in the Elks
Lodge in
Laurel, after
they received a tip that they were
running the illegal machines. The slot
machines were seized on March 9th,
but the owners filed court documents
stating that the machines were legal and
that they wanted them back. Frank Moran
of Acme Amusements’ attorneys said that
the judges had already ruled on a
similar case and found the slot machines
to be legal.
They
said that they are skill based games and
that because of that they are legal in
the state of Maryland. They said that
the only difference is that these games
are geared toward adults instead of
children, but that this did not make
them any less legal.
But
the state of New York understands that
there is a lot of money at stake, which
is why they are so interested in it.
They know that every day that they don’t
have slot machines is hundreds of
thousands of dollars that they will not
be able to get back. And the fact that
it has taken them eight years already
and they still don’t have slot machines
up and running means that millions of
dollars has been wasted that could have
gone to very needy programs in the
state.
