State of
Maryland Looking at
Slot Machine Contract
The
state of Maryland is looking at
approving a contract that would allow
them to start bringing in the slot
machines. The contract, worth $800
million would allow them to begin the
long process of bringing in 15,000 slot
machines to the state, and they would
then be distributed across the state of
Maryland. It is
called a “master contract” but there are
those that have concerns about one of
the companies that the state is looking
at.
The
slot machine contract could be with
GTECH and many residents are fearful of
doing business with the company. They do
not have the best track record, and many
say that they don’t trust them. The
company was just investigated for
bribery and kickbacks going back as far
as the 1990s – leaving many to say that
this is not necessarily the company that
they want to get into bed with.
The
Board of Public Works is reviewing the
nine companies that are vying for the
slot machine final contract, so it is
possible that GTECH will ultimately lose
their bid to handle them for the state.
There is a new law that the state has
that would allow one company to supply
the slot machines, and another to
operate them. They feel that this might
hold off any possibilities of corruption
within the industry.
Others
think that this is just a waste of time
as if there is going to be corruption it
is going to be on one end or the other –
and splitting the duties is not going to
change that.
