Arenac
County Looking Forward to Casino
The
Saginaw Chippewa Tribal Nation at
Saganing is building a casino, and the
residents of Arenac County could not be
happier. They say that their town is
like the one time left behind, and a
casino could do much to change that.
They know that with it coming in, there
will be a revitalization of the town
that has been necessary for years now.
What used to be a thriving Indian
community is now everything but a ghost
town. By bringing in a casino and slot
machines, it will bring in people who
like to play them. This will, in turn,
bring people to local businesses, and
make people want to stay.
Residents have not spent much time with
the tribe, but they know that this will
help them tremendously. The new casino
will bring in jobs, which are sorely
needed. They are expecting to bring in
about 300 jobs, which considering
unemployment in the county is currently
around 12% during the winter months, it
will be a huge boost to the local
economy.
They say that the tribe has given them
money in the past; they have paid for
patrol cars, ambulances, a weather
station, etc. by giving the town
proceeds from their slot machines. The
only concerns brought up have been by
tribal members themselves that don’t
want to see the area’s character
changed. They hope that they and nature
still manage to coexist.
