Job
Campaign Starts
Come June
9th, Ohio County voters will make a
choice as to allow table games into
their county, or to veto the measure
making the expansion impossible. Those
that would like to see the table games
approved have launched the “Jobs for
Ohio County” campaign to convince people
that the smartest thing they could do
was approve the measure.
Mayor Nick Sparchane joined the Ohio
County Commissioner David Sims and
Wheeling Island Racetrack and Gaming
Center President and GM Bob Marshall in
a press conference to discuss the vote
on the table games. With this campaign
they are urging voters that it is in
their best interest to allow the games
into the count as they will bring with
them more than 400 new, permanent jobs.
Proponents say that not only will it
bring in jobs, it will also bring in
revenue. They say that they could be
looking at $400,000 annually to Ohio
County, and $800,000 to the city of
Wheeling itself. This will enable many
programs to continue without having to
raise taxes to pay for them. There are
other cities that will get revenue as
well; they will actually get thousands
in revenue from the table games if
approved.
Many residents have already decided to
vote for the table games as they say it
is tough to get a job in the city, and
with this coming in perhaps more people
will be able to stay. If it does not
pass, they say there is a good chance
they will have to leave their hometown,
and even if they don’t – their children
will because the jobs and the money just
are not here.
