Candidates Discuss Table Games
With the
vote coming up as to whether or not to
approve table games in Charleston
County, the Charleston City Council
members that are vying for seats are
walking a fine line when deciding how to
make their position known on the
gambling issue. Some are for the
expansion in gambling, some are not, and
some refuse to take a side.
Democrat Patrick Jones says that he is
not going to take a stand - that he is
going to allow the voters to make up
their own minds as to what they want. He
says they can spend their money anyway
they see fit, and it isn’t any of his
business. Jim Nester is taking the same
stance, saying that it is up to the
voters to decide, but he would like to
see the revenue go to the police and
fire pensions if approved. Marc
Weintraub wants the same exact thing.
Paul Monroe said that he doesn’t like
gambling, nor does he approve of it, but
because of the money that they are
likely to bring in for the county, he is
telling voters to vote for the measure.
The games are expected to bring in
$700,000 over the next four years, as
well as numerous jobs. Adam Henry Knauff
says he is also urging voters to say yes
to the table games, he said the city can
greatly benefit from them – and Betty
Morton agrees. She says gambling is
everywhere anyway, so why shouldn’t they
benefit from it?
Dale Haynes does not want the games to
pass but expects that they will. He says
he isn’t against a person’s choice to
gamble, but he thinks it will be an
“ugly thing” for the city. Pat Thaw is
against the measure saying it is just a
bunch of promises that won’t get kept if
it is approved. Mary Jane Lopez is also
urging voters not to approve it, but she
said that she would. She said it is up
to the individual, but she doesn’t think
that it is a good idea for most people.
