San Pablo is finally done fighting, yet
everyone is claiming they have won. Both
sides are claiming victory, so who
actually won?
It turns out that there was a compromise
between both parties, and everyone seems
happy. Senator Diane Feinstein wrote the
compromise that allows the Lytton
Rancheria Band of Pomos to operate slot
machine bingo games, but they cannot
grow their empire, nor can they add
poker machines or Class III slot
machines to their casino.
Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger wanted to
give the tribe a monopoly in the Bay
Area, but with the new legislation, the
door will remain open for other casinos
to come in. Many saw the expansion that
the tribe wanted to be too extreme, and
thought that the addition of Class III
slot machines was too much.
The tribe is happy with the compromise,
and they have already endorsed the deal.
The governor can’t be too happy about
the compromise however, as he promised
the tribe things that he could not
deliver. Schwarzenegger was going to
allow them to build a larger casino with
5,000 slot machines – and the tribe was
going to give the state 25% of their
take.
This means less money for the state, and
less money for the governor’s budget.
The compromise still has to pass both
houses of Congress and get a
presidential signature, but no one
expects it not to pass.
