College Students’ Poker Games
You don’t
have to have a casino to play poker it
seems, you can go to any college campus
and play it there. With the popularity
of such games as Texas Hold’em on TV,
many college campuses have found that
their students like to play a little of
it themselves. They say it brings them
in a little extra cash, and no one goes
home without something they couldn’t
really afford to lose.
A recent survey shows that 88% of
college students across the country
gamble in some way each year. Most of
them play poker, but it was followed
closely by lotteries, then casino type
games. Cards are big for the campuses,
as many colleges may not be located
right around the corner from a casino.
For those that are, poker is still
number one, then slot machines.
Most students say they do it for the
socialization, as their games really
aren’t high stakes games. They take
turns hosting the games, and whoever
hosts provides the snacks. They say the
amount they win is really not a lot,
usually somewhere under $100.
Many players say that they like the fact
that they can sit around with their
friends and play cards, plus the betting
adds a little excitement to it. They say
it is better than just sitting around
drinking, which is what they would be
doing otherwise.
Some spend their time playing online
instead of with a group, and this habit
has led to an increased number of
gambling addicts on college campuses.
The survey showed that among males aged
18-22 – online gambling doubled last
year, with at least half of them having
some sort of problem with it at some
point.
