Many
Concerned Over Slot Machine Expansion
With the
California State Senate approving slot
machines, and the compacts now sitting
in the state Assembly, antigambling
groups are hoping that they can count on
their lawmakers to stop the expansion of
slot machines in the state. Many are
concerned with the large amount of slot
machines that are being approved, and
want to know why so many.
Anti-gambling groups like Stand Up for
California and the horse racing industry
are teaming up with labor to stand
against the slot machine compacts. With
such an opposition, it is likely that
they will be able to persuade their
governmental officials that approval of
the slot machine compacts is not the way
to go.
Many of the groups say that people like
Assemblyman Torrico will stand against
the slot machine compacts as they know
how detrimental they would be to the
state and to their workers. They are
also aware of the amount of money that
the tribes have been throwing around,
especially into the pockets of many of
the Senators who approved the bill this
week. The Senate went so far as to say
that since they are sovereign nations,
that they don’t really have the right to
stop whatever the governor has decided
with them.
The antigambling groups say that they
supported the gambling and the slot
machines as a way for the tribes to
bring in money to support themselves.
However, they say that the big ones are
now bringing in billions a year and they
don’t need any more. They say that the
smaller tribes are still living in
squalor and that the bigger tribes are
now only interested in themselves
instead of offering to help those less
fortunate.
