New
Casino Makes Other States Worry
As the
majority of the states currently allow
some form of gambling, they industry is
really starting to see expansion—and as
a result, the states are also looking at
more competition. Just in the last year
Pennsylvania, Florida, and other states
have entered into the gambling playing
field by operating slot machines and
casinos. But other states are more
established, and as they see the
newcomers eat away at some of their slot
machines revenue, they are upping the
stakes.
Currently in New York State, and new
casino could mean a marked decrease in
profits for Pennsylvania. The state just
approved the slot machines and casino in
Monticello, New York, but it isn’t the
slot machines that have both
Pennsylvania and West Virginia
worried—they fear that since this new
casino will offer table gaming in
addition to the slot machines they could
lose out on potential business from the
surrounding areas.
West Virginia is already in the process
of remedying the situation as they are
predicted to allow table gaming at the
state’s slot machines casinos within the
year. But Pennsylvania is a newcomer,
and they have no intentions of
legalizing table gaming any time soon
which most likely means they will be
losing some of their potential players.
The Monticello Raceway is the new site
for the slot machines and casino. The
site was approved for the following: an
additional 2,000 slot machines (3,500
slot machines in all), 125 table games,
24 poker tables, 12 restaurants, retail
space and a large entertainment venue.
The following are the potentially
affected slot machines casinos and
resorts nearby Monticello: Pocono Downs
(on the periphery though, and not
anticipating much fall-out), Mount Airy
(could see a decrease in players but
confident that it’s premiere resort will
keep many of the patrons), and the
Mohawk Tribe (their slot machines and
casino is not yet up and running so they
have no definite predictions).
