Peters
Testifies
Mike
Peters had resigned from the Maine
Gambling Control Board, and after doing
so he testified before the Taxation
Committee. He had wanted to testify so
that he could give them suggestions as
to how they might get more money out of
the slot machine gambling that had
already been allowed in the state.
Peters had sent a letter of resignation
to the governor informing him that he
was resigning because of the expansion
of slot machines and gambling in the
state, and that the state was not
getting enough money off of the deal. He
said that he was not alone in this and
that others would be resigning as well.
He told the Taxation Committee that he
thought there were ways that the state
could start making more money from the
slot machines. He said that there should
be a $6 slot machine patrons, with $4
going to the state and $2 going to the
city. He also said that he thought there
should be a sales tax on the slot
machines and gambling which would bring
in more money.
He said he was resigning because he was
now going to spend his time educating
the general public about the dangers of
gambling and working to keep it from
spreading. He says he will have more
ability to halt slot machines now that
he is in the public sector than he could
on the board.
He says the worst part of other people
on the board resigning as well, is that
when they leave they will all take a
level of experience with them that the
next group will not have. He said that
there was “good moral fabric” there and
that they were “suffering” from their
desire to do what was right.
