Slot Machines, No Pimlico
Magna
Entertainment Corp, which owns Pimlico
Race Course, has desired slot machines
at the track for some time now. They
have been saying that they need the slot
machines to keep the track going, and
that they need the money to increase
their purse size. They say the slot
machines will allow them to do that, and
to bring in more business.
Now, however, their CEO Michael Neuman,
says that although he is optimistic that
slot machines will get approved, he is
aware that without them the Preakness
Stakes will no longer be in Maryland.
Neuman says that the race will end up in
some other state.
The state has already lost the number
two race, the Pimlico Special, as the
company did not have enough money to
fund the purses. They are saying that it
is possible that the company will move
the second leg of the Triple Crown, but
they don’t know when that might be.
Experts say that without slot machines
it would be inevitable. They say that
the track will not have the money for
the purses, and therefore the race will
have to go somewhere else. They say that
if the legislature approves slot
machines, they will be able to use that
revenue to fund the purses thus ensuring
the stability of the race.
Many think that this past 132nd running
of the Triple Crown Race could be
Maryland’s last. The governor has
already said that he is in support of
limited slot machines at the tracks to
keep the Preakness in Maryland, but any
and all slot machine legislation has
failed to get passed.
