UIGEA
Hurting, Not Helping
When the
Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement
Act was first passed, the National Horse
Racing Association was thrilled and
supportive. It had clauses in it that
while making internet gambling illegal,
it made horse racing legal across
country and state lines. This
essentially gave the industry a monopoly
on betting in many parts of the country.
The industry got special dispensation
because of all the money they put into
politicians coffers each year. They told
the politicians what they needed them to
do, and they did it. However, it turned
out that it wasn’t all it was cracked up
to be for the industry.
They are having just as many problems
with their customers using local and off
shore banks as online gambling is, and
it takes much longer to place bets
because of it. Many of their previous
customers are dropping out right left
and center because they don’t want the
hassle that they have been going through
since the law was passed.
What they need to do is to legalize
online race wagering for foreign
operators, and lower their take. They
also need to provide free online videos
every day so that people can pick based
on what they are seeing. This way it is
always at the forefront of gambling.
They also need to keep horse racing in
the news, because people see that and
think it is still a viable industry.
