Could
UIGEA Be Reversed? Part III of III
So now
the US and the WTO should start
negotiations, although it does not look
as though the US is willing to do so.
But they must do something or the US
will start looking at trade sanctions
from the WTO. Congress must abide by
their ruling and either ban all internet
gambling, or none of it. Now, some
people might think that if they put
trade sanctions on the US so that we
cannot get our goods into Antigua
without paying high tariffs, but there
are much worse things that can happen as
a result of this.
For example, the WTO can grant Antigua
the right to ignore all US copyright and
patent laws. Think about that one a
moment. That means that copyrights and
patents would not mean anything – that
means that Bill Gates won’t have the
right to sue them when they start
copying Microsoft programs and selling
them for a fraction of the cost. What
about Disney? What about the little guy
just trying to make his way and his idea
being patented is the only thing he has?
Don’t laugh, the WTO has done it before
and will do it again.
With the US economy so dependent on
their intellectual property, this could
have a huge effect on how the government
handles the problem. They could
literally bankrupt or at the very least
severely handicap many of our major
industries, just because they don’t want
to allow online gambling. Our government
is going to have to legalize online
internet gambling again, because no one
in the US, especially the horse racing
industry, is going to allow these
sanctions to happen - and they aren’t
going to allow them to make internet
gambling completely illegal.
