Preakness Site of Slot Machine Push
Tens of
thousands of race fans had shown up at
the Pimlico Race Course for the
Preakness Stakes to see who might win
the famous race. They found a little
more than just a race for their perusal.
The debate over whether or not slot
machines should be legalized in Maryland
is everywhere you look these days.
Supporters of the slot machines had
brought signs and t-shirts to urge the
people there for the race to vote yes
for slots in the upcoming statewide
referendum.
The supporters brought about 5,000
t-shirts with them, and found that they
were almost out of them by noon. They
had around 60 supporters out there
spreading the word and the shirts and
they are hoping that they mad an impact.
The slot machine debate as waged on for
years, but finally it seems that it is
in the public eye – and has really
connected with residents. Lawmakers have
tried and tried to come to an agreement
on their own, and now they are putting
it to the people of the state to see if
enough of them want slot machines.
Many of the supporters say that they
don’t necessarily agree with slot
machines or gambling but they are aware
that people are going out of state to do
it. They say that if people are going to
gamble anyway, why shouldn’t they make
some money off of it? Instead of
neighboring states taking their money,
those millions of dollars that are going
into the slot machines could be used
within the state.
