Council Ignores Anti-Slot Machine Pleas
There
was a meeting last Thursday night for
the residents of the town to comment on
the proposed sale of Fulton Street to
the Seneca Gaming Corporation for their
slot machine casino. The town for the
most part is opposed to the slot
machines and the sale, and many citizens
spoke up at the meeting. The Council
members themselves did not speak at the
meeting, but it is widely held that they
approve of the slot machine casino.
Roughly 55 residents spoke regarding the
slot machine casino. All but five of
those speakers were opposed to the slot
machines. Many said that the new slot
machine casino would ruin Buffalo as
they know it. They said that the streets
would be wider to make way for more
traffic and that smaller businesses
would fold. Each of those that spoke had
excellent points to make,
environmentally, economically, as well
as socially, for each of these three
areas would be impacted by the slot
machine casino.
Only
five speakers were in favor of the sale
and the casino. Two of them were
officials in the building trades unions,
whose comments and thoughts went no
further than the construction project.
There were also slot machine casino
advocates who were given extra time to
talk up the slot machines, one of whom
was an attorney for the city. When they
spoke they addressed the room full of
anti-slot machine residents by telling
them that it was basically a done deal,
and that they should get used to the
fact that they are going to have a slot
machine casino whether they like it or
not.
