Harding vs. Spiliotis on Slot Machines
There
will only be one slot machine and casino
debate between the candidates in
Peabody’s election, between the
republican candidate Jason Harding, and
the incumbent State Rep. Joyce Spiliotis.
It is imperative for both candidates
that they get their point across clearly
for those that will be casting their
votes on November 7th, and since both
candidates have very different
viewpoints on slot machines and
gambling, they have their work cut out
for them.
The
debate quickly turned to the subject of
bringing in a slot machine casino to the
state of Massachusetts. Spiloitis said
she has voted twice to bring in slot
machines, as she thinks it would benefit
the state greatly. "It would definitely
raise revenue for the state and I would
like to see it implemented here. I hope
it happens," she said. "The original
plan would be to have slot machines at
race tracks, and that is what I voted
for like at Lincoln Park in Rhode
Island."
Harding disagreed saying that he thought
the only thing the slot machines would
bring in was “dirty money.” He went on
to say, “I thought long and hard about
this issue and I think that casinos are
almost like an addiction for people, and
it would bring bad business to the
state. I'm dead set against building a
casino in New Bedford or Salisbury."
