Maine Looking to Expand Slot Machines
Due
to the popularity of slot machines at
the Hollywood Slots in Bangor, the state
of Maine is considering expanding
gambling. There are two groups that are
collecting signatures for referendums to
allow for a tribal horse track with slot
machines in Washington County and a slot
machine casino in western Maine.
The
Maine Gambling Board, however, is taking
it a little slower. They passed a
non-binding resolution in August that
will call for a delay before any more
expansion can be approved in Maine. The
board wants to see what sort of impact
Hollywood Slots is having before they
can move forward with any kind of
expansion. Although things are going
very well with the slot machine casino
at this time, it is still too early to
tell. They reference the lottery as a
perfect case. They say that when it
started in 1974 no one knew how large it
would become.
For
now almost everyone seems to be happy.
The state is happy because they are
getting more slot machine revenue than
they could have ever predicted, the rate
of crime and gambling addiction seems
not to have been affected, and customers
are having a great time playing the slot
machines. The only ones not happy are
those that didn’t want slot machines to
come into the state in the first place,
and for now, there is nothing they can
do about it.
