No Slot Machines for Ohio
It seems everywhere you look voters do
not want slot machines. They voted no on
Prop B that would have brought slot
machines to Guam, and they also voted no
to the Learn and Earn Campaign in Ohio.
The Learn and Earn campaign wanted to
bring in slot machines to help fund
higher education for top performing
seniors, but the residents of the state
didn’t buy it.
The group spent over $20 million to try
and legalize slot machines in Ohio, but
the majority just wasn’t convinced that
this was the way to go. Many felt that
the few number of students that would
initially be helped by the slot machines
just wasn’t enough to justify all of
those that would eventually be hurt by
the machines.
"The people of Ohio saw through the sham
and were not fooled," Senator George
Voinovich said of the 'Learn and Earn'
Issue.
If the Issue had passed, slot machines
would have been legalized in seven horse
tracks across the state, as well as two
stand alone slot machine casinos in the
Cleveland area. It was estimated that
the slot machines would have brought in
$22 million each year to the general
fund of Cincinnati and Hamilton County,
but voters just didn’t want the social
ills that come along with them.
