Majority Rules No Slot
Machines
Before Election Day a poll was taken
that said the proposal to legalize slot
machines might fail, but if it did it
would only be by a small margin. The
survey said that 53% of those that had
an opinion said that they would vote
against the legalization of the slot
machines. Roughly 40% said they would
vote to legalize the slot machines, and
5% did not know how they would vote.
Jackie Marati, an anti-slot machines
spokesperson said that she was
“delighted that the survey showed voters
[were] leaning toward rejecting slot
machines on the ballot.”
Well, she got her wish, and the poll was
pretty dead on. Less than 4,000 votes
decided the slot machine measure, with a
little more than 20,000 voting to keep
slot machines illegal and slightly more
than 16,000 voting to legalize them. The
group against the slot machines thought
that this was a moral victory for the
island, and this showed the measure of
the character of the people who lived
there. Those that were for the slot
machines said that they would continue
to plug along, trying other ways of
expanding not only Guam Greyhound but
also the island of Guam.
