Elections Hold Off Slot Machines
For weeks and
months all the residents of Ohio have
been listening to are campaign promises,
and finally it is over. With the 2007
elections over – they are looking at a
new government, and no one knows what to
expect. Usually mostly Republican,
Ohioans chose to vote Democratic this
time around, as well as voting out the
measure to legalize slot machines. Many
thought the slot machine measure would
pass due to its tie in with education,
but Ohioans chose not to.
This is the first time in 16 years that
a Democrat has been the governor of
Ohio, and many are excited by the
changes that he will be able to bring in
to the state. But just as many as are
excited about the governor, many are
confused as to what happened with the
slot machine amendment. It seemed as
though it would be a shoo-in, especially
with the Learn and Earn campaign touting
that “a vote for slot machines is a vote
for education.” However, many residents
felt that the way the group went about
marketing the slot machine legalization
was shady, and chose to vote the other
way.
Officials will now how to find another
way of assisting high school seniors in
their quest to get a college education,
as without the slot machines there does
not seem to be any hope on the horizon.
Ohio is one of the most expensive states
as far as a college education goes, and
many students were hoping the slot
machine amendment would pass so as to
assist them. Those that voted against
the slot machines said that the only
thing they would bring in to the state
was trouble, and that they only
benefited the slot machine casino
owners.
