Reader Does Not Like Slot Machines

In a letter to the Kennebec Journal, one resident is not very happy that the Hollywood Slots is doing well. Much press has been given to the slot machine casino lately, as they have just celebrated their first anniversary without a hitch. It has gone so well that there is now talk of expanding the number of slot machines that the casino has, and possibly adding slot machines to another location within the state.

However, as the reader pointed out, all the excitement over the amount of customers and slot machine revenue that has come in from the establishment means that someone has to be losing that money for it to be coming into the state. They pointed out that the statistics show that more than 860,000 gamblers have lost more than $500 million in wagers at the facility in Bangor, and that the state and city have gotten $17 million from all of that slot machine revenue – but who lost it for the state to get it.

They wanted to point out that “gamblers lost more than $35 million to an out-of-state corporation,” and that it was “money that could have been spent on products that last longer than the spin of the wheel on a slot machine, including other forms of recreation.”

They also said that even though there has been positive press over the fact that there has been no crime, “one person has been charged with embezzling $23,000 from the convenience store where he worked; he told police he lost the money at Hollywood Slots.”

The gambling addiction hotline says that they have not seen an increase in calls, but that may just mean that no one is calling. They said, “Hollywood Slots has been good for its owners. It has not been good for Maine. “
