Slot Machines Will Bring Addiction
With
the Boardwalk Gaming Center trying to
legalize slot machines in Mission, many
are concerned about the repercussions of
such a move. They say that they
understand that the charities need
money, and that bringing in the 50 slot
machines that the company wants would
help with that; however, they want to
know what the ultimate price would be
that would be paid by the townspeople to
have slot machines in their own
backyard.
Terri
Roberts, an anti-slot machine speaker,
said that she and her prayer group have
been praying that the slot machines do
not become legal. She said, “Nothing
good comes out of gambling. I’ve watched
my sister try to commit suicide numerous
times because of this issue. It is an
addictive thing ... these are demons we
need to battle.”
Another speaker against the slot
machines, Lori Freeman, admitted that
she is a gambling addict as well, and by
bringing slot machines to Mission they
are going to end up with a lot more
people with problems. She said, “You do
turn into an addict…you go numb ... I’ve
lost my home because of gambling, I’ve
lost the respect of friends and family,
but I am slowly getting it back.”
She
said she has seen the looks on senior
citizens faces when they realize they
have lost everything, and knows that by
bringing slot machines to town there
will be a lot more where they came from.
