O’Malley Will Be Slot Machine Broker
Many
in Maryland have wanted slot machines to
become legalized for quite some time.
However, with the state having a
Republican Governor and the legislature
being made up of mostly Democrats, it
has been a long road to nowhere. Not for
lack of trying, though, as Governor
Ehrlich tried for all four years of his
term to get slot machines legalized, but
could not get a bill passed.
With
the new Governor-elect Martin O’Malley
coming in, many think he will have a
real shot at getting the slot machines
approved. O’Malley has already said that
he will work toward getting legalized
slot machines, although he will not make
it the main focus of his term. "To get
this issue behind us, I would have to
take an active role, and that's what's
been missing in the past," he said.
O’Malley believes that the only way the
bill to legalize the slot machines will
ever get passed is if the governor takes
a major stand on getting involved, and
that means testifying about slot machine
bills that have actually been written.
He has not said if he will be the one
that will be writing and introducing
that slot machine legislation, or how
exactly he plans on being involved in
the process. He is fully committed to
putting slot machines at the racetracks,
but will not allow slot machines or any
other sort of gambling expansion or
casinos in the state.
